Registration Opens for the International Conference on Sexual Diversity and Gender Plurality in the Francophonie

conference-francophonie-2017_HR-V2Montréal, March 9, 2017 – “We’re off and running!”, exclaimed Montréal Pride President, Éric Pineault, when he announced the opening of registrations for the international conference Equality & Legality: Sexual Diversity and Gender Plurality in the Francophonie, which is taking place on August 18 as part of Canada Pride Montréal 2017.

In the last week, Montréal Pride announced the creation of the conference’s scientific committee, unveiled six key discussion themes, and launched a call for proposals. Today, Montréal Pride opened the registration for conference attendees (with an early registration period at a reduced rate), and also unveiled the creation of a bursary program of more than $100,000.

“We invite researchers, scholars, activists, and all those concerned with the rights, safety, and health of LGBTQ people to join us in Montréal on August 18. We welcome all participants who are interested in the ability of LGBTQ persons to live their lives fully and openly wherever they are in the Francophonie,” said the President of Montréal Pride.

Registration is now open online. Attendees who register before March 31 are entitled to a reduced rate. Regular registration runs from April 1 until August 1, 2017. Late registration after this date will incur additional costs.

Montréal Pride organizes the most important LGBTQ pride celebrations in the entire French-speaking world and it wishes o mobilize academics and activists from around the world, to not only advance knowledge, but to also advance the community’s rights. Even today in the Francophonie, too many countries severely repress individuals who express their difference through gender identity or sexual orientation. In some countries, people who identify as LGBT or Q can face the death penalty, in others they risk imprisonment, and almost everywhere they are victims of some form of stigmatization, if not outright discrimination.

The Equality and Legality conference is made possible thanks to the financial support of its presenting sponsor, the Government of Québec, and is organised in collaboration with the Canadian Foundation for Cross-Cultural Dialogue.
