Over 400 Participants Expected in Montréal

Major Conference to Address LGBTTIQA2S Rights in Canada

Montréal, May 30 2017 — Next August 15 to 17, as part of Canada Pride Montréal 2017, a national conference on LGBTTIQA2S Lives: Our Struggles, Our Victories, Our Challenges will bring together key community and cultural partners, university researchers, trade union as well as government representatives to assess the state of LGBTTIQA2S rights in Canada and determine avenues for their future. The event will be held at the La Plaza Conference Centre, 420, Sherbrooke Street West, in Montréal.

“For the first time in Montréal since the global conference of the 1st World Outgames in 2006, we will examine the issues that concern our communities of the sexual diversity and gender plurality across Canada,” says Montréal Pride President and founder, Éric Pineault. “With the current difficult global context and the rise of the extreme right, this is a welcome opportunity to address the evolving rights of intersex people, migrants, refugees and two-spirit individuals,” he adds.

Reality-based program and themes

The themes that the conference Scientific Committee has identified will allow for the discussion of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, of youth, seniors, family diversity, Canada’s Pride Movement and of global issues.

These themes will be developed through 55 workshops and panels addressing trans* issues, sexual health, mental health, faith, ableism, community histories, the arts, racism and legal aspects.

The three plenary sessions will be dedicated to as many highly topical subjects that tend to be swept aside despite their importance: intersexuality, issues related to immigration and refugees and finally, bispirituality among Indigenous Peoples.

Two Committed Co-Chairpersons

Two co-chairs of the Scientific Committee presided over the development of the conference program. They are Bill Ryan, researcher and professor of Social work, Gender and Sexual Diversity and

Family Therapy at McGill University, and Mona Greebaum, executive director of the LGBT Family Coalition, an association that advocates for families with lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans parents.
