Montréal Pride Launches $100,000+ Bursary Program to Support Attendance at the International “Equality and Legality” Conference on LGBTQ Rights in the Francophonie

conference-francophonie-2017_HR-V2Montréal, March 10, 2017 – Montréal Pride President, Éric Pineault, today announced the launch of a bursary program of more than $100,000 to support the attendance of participants from outside Québec coming to the “Equality and Legality conference.

According to Mr. Pineault, it is important to dedicate resources that will facilitate attendance by people who, without the program, could not afford a trip to Montréal to attend the conference. “The costs of travelling to Montréal next August to attend the Equality and Legality conference must not be a barrier to participation,” said the organisation’s president.

The program’s priority will be to support participants from outside Québec who have the farthest distances to travel and who incur the most considerable costs. A current sum of $100,000 is earmarked for this program and steps are underway to increase it.

Individuals who register for the conference will be able to apply online for a bursary starting April 1, 2017 by filling the application on the conference’s website. Until then, participants are encouraged to register for the conference and to prepare for their application. By meeting some basic criteria, up to 100 % of travel costs, accommodation, meals and registration will qualify for the bursary award. Each application will be assessed individually, according to the applicant’s financial means.

Maximum attendance at the conference is vital, because today still, in the Francophonie, many countries severely repress people who express their difference through gender identity or sexual orientation. In some cases, identifying as LGBTQ is punishable by death, in others by imprisonment, and almost everywhere by some form of stigmatisation, if not outright discrimination. Many are victims of various forms of deprivation, especially economic ones. During the conference, Montréal Pride intends to create a safe and friendly space that will provide a secure environment for participants from around the world.

The “Equality and Legality” conference is made possible thanks to the financial support of its presenting sponsor, the Government of Québec, and is organised in collaboration with the Canadian Foundation for Cross-Cultural Dialogue.
