World First: Equality & Legality – International Conference on Sexual Diversity & Gender Plurality in the Francophonie
Montréal, December 14, 2016 — Fierté Montréal Pride President, Éric Pineault, announced that the organisation will host an international conference on LGBTQ rights in French-speaking countries on August 18, 2017. Mr. Pineault was accompanied for the announcement by the Québec Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie, Christine St-Pierre. The Québec Government is the presenting sponsor of the conference.
This conference’s announcement follows the Minister’s statement in Madagascar during the recent summit of La Francophonie, where she underscored the importance of preventing discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender expression. The Minister insisted today on the fact that “this conference will provide an exceptional platform to address key LGBT issues as they relate to the Francophone world”.
Montréal Pride is proud to lend its support to this project. It hopes to build alliances around the world and intends to create an engaging safe space during the conference. “The time has come to raise awareness on the injustices that persons from sexual diversity and gender plurality communities are exposed to in the Francophonie,” said Mr. Pineault. “We need to look forward and build a future where people may live their lives fully, without fear for their safety.”
Montréal Pride will partner with a number of groups and organisations, including the Canadian Foundation for Cross-Cultural Dialogue, which will assist in ensuring participation from Francophone LGBTQ persons across Canada. Montréal Pride will establish a scientific committee to provide direction for the conference and create a grants programme that will help make the conference affordable for local participants as well as outside attendees. In addition to the Equality & Legality conference, Montréal Pride is hosting, from August 15 to 17, 2017, a national conference called LGBTTIQA2S Lives: Our Struggles, Our Victories, Our Challenges. Both events are held as part of Canada Pride Montréal 2017.
