From the elegant symbolism of the empty flatbed concluding São Paulo’s mammoth pride parade, to Moscow Pride organizer Nikolai Alekseev’s Byzantine ingenuity and dogged determination, Beyond Gay – The Politics of Pride is a moving portrait of international LGBT struggles for human rights. Vancouver Pride Marshal Big Gay Ken (Coolen) explains the difference between marches and parades, and the importance of confronting the “authorities in your own communities,” as he visits countries where attempting to stage pride festivities invites extreme reactions. First-time director Bob Christie teams up with Aerlyn Weissman (Forbidden Love) in this panoramic meditation on the state of our queer nations. Beyond Gay reflects an emerging trend in which our listless and stagnant celebrations return to their fiercely flamboyant roots – by expressing an international solidarity with oppressed LGBT people everywhere.

La Duchesse de Langeais – Presented in French

STUDIO-THÉÂTRE DE LA PLACE DES ARTS (175, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest)

La Duchesse de LangeaisThe universe of Michel Tremblay’s La Duchesse de Langeais is back in a production by Rita Lafontaine, one of playwright’s favorite actresses. The character of Edward, one of the protagonists in Tremblay’s work, is portrayed brilliantly by Francis Bourgea, a young actor who has managed to slip into the shoes of a character that is larger than life. Rita Lafontaine has re-staged this play, which was originally created 40 years ago. The show is a tribute to author Michel Tremblay, her friend and accomplice over these past decades. In creating some fifteen roles for Tremblay’s work, Lafontaine has developed a deep understanding of the playwright’s world. This is a classic Tremblay play that presents two worlds: one, of outrageously wild characters with an incredible sense of repartee and the other, an understated and subtle world of poignant emotions.
